Web Site Cross Linking and Link Importance

Advanced web site linking techniques: Tributary links

Most Webmasters are aware by now that links to their own web site are given much more importance by the search engines if they are from web sites with similar or related subject matter.

The more importance the web site of similar subject matter is, the more page rank and importance is passed on through a link to the end site.

What some Webmasters may not have thought of, however, is that this pattern does not apply just once but much replicate itself over and over again for maximum effect to the end site. So the site of similar subject matter that links to our end site must itself have other sites of similar subject matter linking to it. And they in turn must have sites of similar subject matter linking to them.

These " tributary links " each gain more importance with more tributaries links of their own linking to them -- to put it another way, authority sites need to have links coming to them from other authority sites, which in turn need tributary links from yet other authority sites.

How is one to achieve this with one's own web site? You may be lucky enough to already have a network of sites with similar subject matter linking to each other. If so it is important to make sure that other authority sites outside your own network link into your own authority sites.

If you do not have such a network of sites of related subject matter, begin to build one. Use article marketing and other methods to gain relevant high page rank links to your authority sites.

Linking arrangements with other Webmasters may also be sought through carefully worded and individual emails, however the purpose here is not to exchange reciprocal links, which have less value than one-way links.

You may be able to persuade some Webmasters that your content is of a sufficient use to their visitors that they will want to link to it regardless of a return link, or you may be able to provide a return link but from a different site than the one the other Webmaster is linking to. Be careful with triangular links when doing this though, as such triangles are easily recognised by the search engines and may be seen as artificial, therefore, with a knock-on effect on results page ranking.

Forum and blog posts may also be used to bring one-way links to a web site, however it is important that you understand that you must be fully engaged in the discussions in a forum, over a period of time, and with genuine intention, for this technique to be successful. Likewise with blog posts
